SPEEDIER

Surveillance integrating Phylogenetics and Epidemiology for Elimination of Disease: Evaluation of Rabies Control in the Philippines

SPEEDIER introduces an enhanced surveillance approach using Integrated Bite Case Management (IBCM) as a strategy to detect rabid animals, with risk assessment of bite patients triggering epidemiological investigations. The project initially focused on two provinces in the Philippines, Romblon and Oriental Mindoro and recently expanded to Marinduque province, with the aim of scaling up across MIMAROPA region.

SPEEDIER’s overarching aim is to deliver a cost-effective, epidemiologically robust surveillance package which can guide and sustain the elimination of rabies from the Philippines.

SPEEDIER aims to:
  • Increase case detection and improve patient care
  • Improve post-exposure prophylaxis (PEP) use
  • Provide early detection of rabid animal cases
  • Guide the national control programme
  • Develop a replicable package for scaling up IBCM using best practice and a proven cost-effective template for verifying and sustaining rabies freedom
